Speeding is killing us and the NEW Dominca Reform Party (DRP) has a plan to stop it. In Dominica today, the sound of screeching tires, sirens, and roadside tragedy is becoming far too familiar. Accidents are no longer rare, they are expected. And the most common cause behind these crashes? Speeding.
We live on a small island. You can drive from one end of Dominica to the other in about an hour. There is absolutely NO REASON to be racing through our roads, risking your life and the lives of others. Yet we see it every day, in towns, on hills, near schools, in quiet villages. And every time we ignore it, the next tragedy gets closer.
When we are elected, we will not wait for another death to act. We will confront this problem head-on, and we will give our country a clear and structured plan to reduce reckless driving and save lives.
Step 1: Enforce The Law – With Seriousness.
Our first move will be to notify the public that a new era of traffic enforcement is beginning. The days of turning a blind eye to speeding are over.
We will purchase and deploy speed-monitoring equipment, including radar guns and mobile enforcement tools. With these in place, we will:
- Begin issuing speeding tickets immediately.
- Introduce hefty fines for violators.
- Suspend licenses for repeat offenders.
- And most importantly: if you are caught driving with a suspended license, you will go to jail on the first offence. No excuses, no second chances.
This is not about punishment, it is about protecting life. Too many families have buried loved ones because someone else decided their time was more important than someone else’s life.
Step 2: If Enforcement Fails, We Will Slow You Down Ourselves.
If Dominicans continue to speed even after tickets and penalties, then we will physically force a change in behavior. We will begin installing speed bumps, rumble strips, and other traffic-calming devices island-wide.
We will focus on:
- School zones.
- Residential neighborhoods.
- Sharp corners and dangerous bends.
- Any area flagged by communities or police as high-speed zones.
Wherever high speeds are recorded, we will slow down traffic, with or without your cooperation.
Additional Measures We Will Implement.
- Support for police enforcement
We will ensure law enforcement is fully equipped, trained, and empowered to act without political interference or resource shortages. - A national awareness campaign
We will launch a campaign under the banner: “Slow Down. Save Lives.” This will educate drivers on the deadly risks of speeding and the new consequences in place. - A community reporting system
Citizens will be able to report speeding hotspots or reckless drivers anonymously. Government and police will investigate and respond quickly.
The Bottom Line.
This is about safety. About saving children walking to school. About preventing roadside crosses and tears. About reminding every driver that no destination is more important than a life.
We cannot afford to wait until another family is grieving. Speed kills. It is time to slow it down.
