For too long, Dominicans have been burdened with an unfair departure tax, a fee that citizens are forced to pay just to leave their own country, even when they have a return ticket in hand. At a time when the cost of living is climbing, airfare prices are rising, and visa restrictions are tightening, this tax is not just unreasonable, it is ridiculous.
Traveling as a Dominican is already challenging enough. Whether you are taking a well-deserved vacation, visiting family abroad, or attending important events, the financial and bureaucratic hurdles are endless. Adding a steep departure tax on top of it all feels less like a government policy and more like a cash grab at the expense of hardworking citizens.
For tourists, a departure tax might make sense, but for Dominicans who live here, work here, and pay taxes here, it is nothing short of exploitation. Why should a citizen be penalized for wanting to leave the country temporarily when they are guaranteed to return?
The NEW Dominica Reform Party (DRP) believes it is time for change. Under a the NEW Dominica Reform Party government, locals who live in Dominica and hold a valid return ticket would be exempt from paying the departure tax.
This is no just about money, it is about fairness. Dominicans already contribute enough through taxes and economic activity. The government should be making it easier, not harder, for its people to travel, broaden their opportunities, and maintain strong connections abroad.
The NEW Dominica Reform Party (DRP) stands for putting Dominicans first. Removing this unnecessary tax for citizens is just one step toward restoring fairness, dignity, and respect for the people of Dominica.
