Once again, we hear the familiar cries from the indivduals: “The new election reform process is unfair!” Let us pause and ask, What exactly are they complaining about this time?
The government has made it clear: individuals without valid ID—passports, driver’s licenses, or social security cards can now get new ones or renew existing ones completely free of charge. There is absolutely no reason for anyone on this island, senior or not, to be without a piece of valid ID.
Everyone has family, friends, or someone they can turn to for help. This is not like the big countries where people are isolated and may not have anyone to assist them. In Dominica, you have a community around you, use it!
If you do not have a valid piece of ID, the truth is simple: Because you did not want a valid one.
Let us not forget the history. In the last election, the same voters who protested and refused to use the voting list. Their boycott handed Skerrit an unchallenged victory. And now, when the list has been purged and renewed, a move meant to level the playing field, they cry foul.
So, what is it exactly that these complaints hope to achieve? Should people be allowed to walk into a registration center and vote without proper ID? That would be a return to chaos and a blatant invitation for fraud.
The point of all the past noise and boycotts was supposed to be reform. Yet, here we are, watching the same voices undermine the very changes that would make elections fairer. The solution is simple: stop complaining, and do something about it. Renew or obtain your ID. It is free. It is easy. And it ensures your voice is heard in a system designed to include you.
If those who complain had directed even half the energy they pour into whining, and towards supporting real change, toward building a NEW party or strengthening accountability, we would not be stuck in this cycle of inaction.
Instead, Dominica continues to be an island where there is much talk and little action. And until that changes, we will remain the laughing stock of the Caribbean.
It is time to stop blaming the system and start participating in it. Your voice matters, but only if you show up.
